Our Story

The Urban Artifact Story

We're a fruit brewery in Cincinnati. We make beer with real fruit. We thought that was the point.

Urban Artifact opened in 2015 in an 1876 church in Northside. The building was a Catholic parish for over a century. Now it's a brewery, a music venue, a reception hall, a radio station, and a taproom. The pews are gone. Some of the stained glass is still there.

We brew Fruit Tarts. That's a style we developed, named, and have been perfecting since day one. It's a sour beer made with real fruit - not flavoring, not extract. Just fruit. Sometimes a lot of it. Sometimes more than seems reasonable. Our flagship Gadget has about sixteen real blackberries and raspberries in every can. We counted.

Over the course of a year, we use more than a million pounds of real fruit. We grow some of it on the property. We process all of it ourselves. The color in the glass is the color of the fruit. There's no other way for us to make it look like that.

This approach has gotten us into some interesting rooms. Gadget was named one of the Top 50 Beers in the World by Men's Journal, alongside legends like Rodenbach and Cantillon. We've won Double Gold at the Tasting Alliance Beer Competition in San Francisco. We've won Gold at the US Open Beer Championship. We were the only American brewery - the only Western brewery - to win at the China International Beer Competition. We've earned more than twenty international medals.

We didn't win them by being clever. We won them by counting berries.

We make beer for people who already love beer. We make beer for people who don't. We make beer for people who'd rather be drinking a cocktail. The lineup changes. The standard doesn't. Everything we make starts with real fruit and ends with a glass of something that tastes like the fruit on the can.

The hand-drawn art on every label - the capybaras, the explorers, the strange little worlds - comes from inside the building. Same with the artwork across the brand. The beer and the art come from the same hands.

We're a brewery for the curious. People who notice when a "strawberry" drink doesn't taste like strawberry. People who read ingredient lists. People who have opinions about flavor. People who want to know where things come from. We made this place for all of you, and we're glad you found us.

If you're in Cincinnati, come see the castle. The taproom is open Tuesday through Sunday, the beer is on tap, and someone will probably want to talk to you about fruit.
