On the Isle
Genni works the fields east of Artifact City, where the watermelons get the long sun and the long quiet. She is a cat with some number of lives behind her, and she has never told anyone which one she's on. Her days go to the vines. Her evenings go to conversations that nobody on the Isle pries into, held at the edge of the field with company the rest of us can't see.
She's selective in a way that takes a season to explain. A melon she passes over stays where it lies. The ones she chooses go down to the cellar and come back up brighter than they went in, which is rarely how it goes for a melon, or for anything else left in the dark. Nobody has asked how she manages it. The beer comes out bright and friendly against all reasonable expectation, and most people are content to leave the matter there.
In the brewery
Watermelon is one of the hardest fruits to brew with. Fermented the usual way, melons throw off funky flavors that taste nothing like the fruit you started with, which is why watermelon in a beer is so often a flavoring.
Genni was first released in 2025, when we added a new seasonal to the American Fruit Tart line. It marks the first time Bret was confident he had the science of melons worked out, and it took a decade of brewing with fruit to get there. What's in the can is real watermelon and vanilla, with nothing standing in for either.
Genni is a summer seasonal. When she's back, you'll find her here.
