The beer

Kilobyte was a Midwest Fruit Tart, which on our scale means more than two pounds of fruit in every gallon, and all of that fruit was golden raspberry. We called it a Rare Midwest Fruit Tart because rare is the word we keep for fruit that is difficult to source or unique to beer. Golden raspberries are bright golden yellow in color, but they taste very similar to their red cousins. Unlike black raspberries, which carry a completely unique flavor profile, the goldens smell and taste like red raspberries with a little bit of additional acidity.

Its place in the lineup

Kilobyte came out in 2023. Urban Artifact teamed up with a farmer to plant 3 acres of golden raspberries specifically for us, so we could use this incredible fruit in some fun beers. Kilobyte (and the later barrel-aged version) was the epitome of this unique flavor. We released it as a Rare Midwest Fruit Tart for a couple of years, in the fall after the summer berry harvest.

The name and the label

Kilobytes are definitely an urban artifact. The kilobyte was a common measure of data storage through the '80s and '90s, and we've since passed it for computer memory tens of thousands of times bigger. The label shows some of my earliest computer experiences, with a Commodore 64, a joystick and floppy disks.
